A classification system for gonad development in triploid Crassostrea virginica

چکیده
Triploidy is a common form of genetic improvement that confers benefits associated with reduced fecundity. Triploid oysters produce fewer gametes yet undergo gametogenesis and develop gonads to variable extents. The typically abnormal gonad development in triploid has often been summarized using criteria developed for the more uniform diploid oysters, which can lead misleading characterizations. Classification systems designed such as Crassostrea gigas, have allowed less subjectivity, repeatability, engendered hypotheses developmental pathways specific triploids. Despite recent interest virginica connection mortality events, C. primarily oysters. In this work, novel classification system was while examining triploids diploids sampled regularly from site without “triploid mortality” event. Triploids were classified based on type gonia present, presence spermatogenic cells or oocytes, relative abundance gametes. stark contrast previously characterized gigas. A relationship between nature fecundity, described absent, instead, we hypothesize indicates sex. Regular, “normal” male triploids, whereas irregular indicated female lineages. Pathways are proposed anatomical observations time series data. Gonads mostly similar at affected (exhibiting mortality) control well moribund live during anatomy appears unlinked mortality; however, underlying metabolic processes remain leading culprit.

Survival of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts in Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica).
Toxoplasma gondii has recently been recognized to be widely prevalent in the marine environment. It has previously been determined that Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) can remove sporulated T. gondii oocysts from seawater and that oocysts retain their infectivity for mice. This study examined the long-term survival of T. gondii oocysts in oysters and examined how efficient oysters were ...
متن کاملDevelopment of Genetic Markers for Triploid Verification of the Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas
The triploid Pacific oyster, which is produced by mating tetraploid and diploid oysters, is favored by the aquaculture industry because of its better flavor and firmer texture, particularly during the summer. However, tetraploid oyster production is not feasible in all oysters; the development of tetraploid oysters is ongoing in some oyster species. Thus, a method for ploidy verification is nec...

متن کاملOxygen Consumption in the American Oyster Crassostrea virginica
Acclimated and acute rates of oxygen consumption of the American oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) were measured under 9 salinity-temperature combinations during declining oxygen tensions. In acclimated and non-acclimated individuals the basal rate of oxygen uptake increased significantly with each 10 C" rise in temperature. Multiple regression equations relating exposure and experimental t...
